EFFICIENT USE OF APPLIANCES

Carry out an audit of the electrical appliances used in your school. Note down the wattage of each appliance. (This is normally given on a data plate at the back of the appliance. Ask permission first).

Estimate the amount of hours each appliance is likely to be used for during an average school week and calculate the energy used in kWh and cost in pence. Use the following equation to help you:

Power rating (watts) x time (in hours) x unit cost (7p)

1000

For example: A 500 watt hair dryer used for one hour would cost

500 watts x 1 hour x 7p

1000
= 3.5p

Use this sheet to help you too. An example has been given for guidance.
